Colon hydrotherapy heals naturally, using only water to flush toxins, eliminate waste and relieve common digestive problems like constipation, gas and bloating.
Colon cleansing benefits the whole body. By cleansing the colon of waste, your digestive system becomes more effective in absorbing nutrients and vitamins that play a vital role in the health of your other organs. This elimination also helps ease suffering from excessive gas and bloating caused by undigested food fermenting in your colon for long periods of time.
You may be looking for a way to detox your body of toxic build-up, parasites or disease. Know that the best detox is drug-free, pain free, safe and effective. Colon hydrotherapy is a natural health treatment that builds and restores wellness by using the body’s own natural healing abilities and is gentle with little to no side effects.
Hydrotherapy is not only used as treatment, it is a great tool for prevention as well.
Colon hydrotherapy helps prevent future occurrences of constipation by increasing the strength of the colon to move waste along for elimination. Since waste moves along the colon at a more regular pace, it has less time to ferment and release gas that causes uncomfortable and painful bloating. Many clients also note a great increase in energy due to the refocusing of energy previously used for forcing waste through the intestines.
Colon hydrotherapy is a sanitary method of introducing filtered water into the colon. Through hydration the hardened waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. By definitions, peristalsis is the wavelike muscular contractions of the alimentary canal or other tubular structures by which contents are forced onward toward the opening. This process is repeated several times during a session. The colon's main purpose is to absorb water. When it is impacted with fecal matter, the water must go directly through this plaque before entering your blood stream. This absorption of toxic water is then used by all the other organs and cells in your body. Over time, these toxins will cause inflammation, which will in time, cause disease.
Colon hydrotherapy is a drug free way to a healthy colon. It relieves digestive issues, constipation, gas and bloating. It decreases toxins, parasites, candida, colon plaque and intestinal inflammation.
During this 45 minute treatment, clients may experience slight bloating and some cramping. You are fully draped and the client's dignity is always maintained. The number of treatments depends on the individual and their goals.

What is the difference between a colonic, colon hydrotherapy and colon cleansing?
All of these terms describe the same method for cleansing the colon using filtered water. I prefer the term Colon Hydrotherapy, which is the term used by the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT) of which I am a member and have been tested and certified as a Colon Hydro Therapist. Colon hydrotherapy is a sanitary method of introducing filtered water into the colon. Through hydration, the hardened waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis.
Are there any preparations that must be performed before a colon cleanse?
Yes. I ask that you eat lighter foods the day before an appointment. These are foods that are easier to digest like chicken, fish, vegetables, rice and fruits. If possible avoid breads, dairy, red meat, coffee and alcohol before and right after your appointment. Also helpful is having a bowel movement prior to the colonic, which will save time and permits more cleaning to be accomplished.
What is the function of the colon?
The colon, or the large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract. A healthy colon is about 5 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. The major function of the colon is to eliminate waste through the anus and conserve water through reabsorption. It is believed about 80% of the immune system resides in the colon.
What are the characteristics of a healthy, well functioning colon vs. a sick colon?
Healthy babies, animals and adults will have bowel movements shortly after each meal is eaten, which is one characteristic of a healthy colon. The elimination of waste should be quick and easy – no pain or discomfort and should last no longer than 10 seconds. If your stool is long, light brown with no strong odour and floats or sinks very slowly, that is a good sign of strong colon health.
A toxic colon operates very differently. Aside from the plethora of disorders associated with colon toxicity, the colon itself becomes damaged. The colon can became very dilated and inflamed. This causes it to become clogged with waste that will harden and further lead to increased toxicity. This new hard coating on the lining makes bowel movements more difficult and unpleasant. In a more advanced state, the lining may develop holes that allow toxins back into the bloodstream where they will travel to the rest of the body and devastate your health.
How does colon hydrotherapy work?
During each session the client’s modesty and comfort needs are safeguarded by the therapist. The client lies fully draped on a cushioned table and a disposable, sterile speculum is self-inserted approximately 2 inches in the rectum. Warm, purified water flows into the colon via a small hose attached to the side of the speculum. The used water and waste is then eliminated through a larger hose attached to the end of the speculum. During each fill, only the volume of water that feels comfortable for the client is introduced. Once you feel a full sensation, you tell the therapist and the water is then released. Since the waste is contained in this closed system there is no mess or odour. The process is repeated for about 45 minutes.
The eliminated waste passes through a viewing tube for observation. This provides you the opportunity to discuss any questions you have about what you see. After the procedure, you spend some time in the bathroom to empty your bowels completely. We encourage clients to take their time until their feel empty and ready to go home.
How often should I get colon hydrotherapy?
This depends upon individual colon health, regular diet and digestive goals. For a vegetarian who consumes mostly organic, plant based foods and has regular bowel movements an occasional hydrotherapy session is recommended like having seasonal cleanings. This would be once every four months, or whenever the season changes.
If you suffer often from constipation, bloating, gas or diarrhea and follow a typical North American diet of fried foods, heavy meats, gluten, dairy and low fiber, you should come in more often. Similar to brushing your teeth, you may wish to make colon hydrotherapy a part of your regular hygiene program as it will take some time to chip away at the harden stool deposits and encrusted fecal matter.
Most people feel relief after just one session, but just one will not solve a bowel problem or release all of the toxins that have built up over the years. A person of average health would benefit greatly from a series or 6 or 7 sessions over the period of a few weeks. For some, a series of consecutive sessions is needed followed by a break. I work with each client to figure out a schedule that works best for them and their health.
If the lungs, skin, liver, kidneys are also eliminating organs, why is colon hydrotherapy important?
It’s true that various parts of the human body deal with separating and eliminating toxins. This is good news! Our bodies have many systems of defence to maintain our health. Over history though, it has been found that when the colon is cleansed, the well being of the whole body is greatly enhanced. By starting with the colon, we open the body to more effectively eliminate toxins and reduce the burden on our other organs. If the colon can’t eliminate properly, the built up toxins will pass through the walls of the colon and into the bloodstream. This is known as “autointoxication” and is widely understood to be the root cause of many illnesses.
Are colon hydrotherapy treatments painful or embarrassing?
Colon hydrotherapy is neither painful nor embarrassing because professional colon hydrotherapists are trained to both maintain the dignity of the client and minimize any discomfort. It is possible that the colon muscles will suddenly contract while expelling liquid waste, but this feeling is similar to cramping that occurs during regular bowel movements. Many people are especially pleased with feeling lighter, clean and clear after the treatment.
Are colonics dangerous in any way?
Colon hydrotherapy is completely safe. Colon hydrotherapists follow strict protocols for sterilization of all equipment and use only filtered, contaminate free water. Disposable sterile speculums are used for each client individually and only inserted 2 inches into the colon so there is no risk of perforating the bowel.
The filtered water is temperature controlled and pressure regulated under the direct control of the therapist. There is no risk of too much pressure because the client decides how much water is enough before it is release. Colon hydrotherapists are also trained to screen for potential reasons as to when and why a client should not have a treatment.
When is colon hydrotherapy not appropriate?
If you have been diagnosed with colon health issues, please consult with your physician before booking an appointment. Although colon hydrotherapy helps prevent many diseases from developing, it can exacerbate existing chronic conditions.
You should not have colon hydrotherapy if you have/had any of these:
- Uncontrolled Hypertension
- Congestive Heart Failure
- An Aneurysm
- Severe Anemia
- GI Hemorrhage/Perforation
- Severe Hemorrhoids
- Renal Insufficiency
- Carcinoma of the Colon
- Abdominal Hernia
- Recent Colon Surgery (less than three months prior)
- Are Pregnant
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Crohn's disease
- Rectal or Intestinal Tumors
If you’ve had recent surgery please talk to your colon therapist about it before booking an appointment.
How can I tell if I have toxic material in my colon?
Common symptoms of a toxic colon include the following:
- Chronic constipation
- Abdominal gas and bloating/indigestion
- Stomach aches
- Overweight, distended or protruding abdomen
- Chronic skin conditions like acne/blemishes or dark circles under the eyes
- Brittle nails or hair
- Frequent colds/flus and infections
- Menstrual problems
- Prostate problems
- Lower back pain
- Joint pain
- Kidney stones/gallstones
- Frequent headaches
- General fatigue, having low energy or mental confusion
- Bad breath, coated tongue, body/feet odour
Since the colon acts as the body’s natural sewer system, if it is not maintained in a healthy state, the rest of the body suffers.
Some people say that colonics wash out beneficial intestinal bacteria and valuable nutrients. Is this true?
We understand that beneficial and friendly bacteria are essential for optimum health and proper digestive function. By cleansing the colon of unfriendly bacteria and putrefied material, we allow for friendly bacteria to flourish, which improves digestion, the immune system and overall health. Good bacteria will only breed in a clean environment. Each time you clean out the garbage with colon hydrotherapy, you improve the environment for this bacteria to thrive. Natural bowel flora consists of 85% friendly bacteria and 15% unfriendly bacteria. But with a toxic lifestyle compounded by stress, prescription drugs and other factors, these numbers sometimes reverse. That’s why it’s important that you maintain a healthy, clean colon to allow the body to do its work. We also offer our clients probiotics to help their bodies rebuild healthy bacteria following treatment.
Can laxatives or enemas accomplish the same result?
No, they cannot. Enemas will effectively reach only 6 -12 inches into the 5 foot long colon tract. Enemas are useful for emptying the rectum and sigmoid colon, but not the ascending, transverse or descending colon. This leaves a lot of impacted material along the remaining 4 feet. As well you have more access to water during hydrotherapy, up to 60 litres. All of that water helps flush out the colon, more than an enema ever could. Also, colon hydrotherapy helps to tone and stimulate the intestinal walls, leading to a better functioning colon.
Laxatives are formulated specifically for constipation and are extremely irritating to the intestinal walls and the whole digestive tract. This impairs absorption functions of the small intestine and is why laxatives are never recommended for long-term use.
The side effects of laxatives are numerous:
- Abdominal pain/cramps
- Skin rash
Overusing laxatives can cause:
- Weakened or lazy bowel
- Unbalanced levels of salt and mineral in body
Colon hydrotherapy covers the entire length of the colon (large intestine) so it is a much more safe and thorough form of cleansing than enemas or laxatives. As well, the hydrotherapy tones and stimulates the intestinal walls, which leads to a better functioning colon!
Will colonics make me constipated or give me diarrhea? Explain how they will feel.
Normally you will feel a filling sensation and the coolness of the water in the beginning. Once you feel full, I reverse the flow of water and let your body release the waste. Afterwards most people feel relaxed, lighter and even say they feel great. You can return to your normal daily activities without worrying about being constipated or having diarrhea. You will not be running to the toilet all day. Some clients may have a slight delay in bowel movements after therapy but this is soon followed with larger stool that flows more easily out of the rectum.
Can colon hydrotherapy be used to prepare for a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy?
Colon hydrotherapy is a fantastic way to prepare and cleanse the colon before either a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Both of these procedures look at the colon through the rectum and benefit from colon walls that are free of debris that obstructs views.
Of course you should speak with your physician or GI specialist before undergoing any treatments. But, by combining colon hydrotherapy with the recommendations of your doctor, you can avoid drinking the harsh laxatives that will go through your whole digestive tract.
What should I be looking for in a colon hydrotherapist?
Having colon therapy is an intimate experience. You would fair well to work with someone who you can develop trust, within an environment that you can feel safe, comfortable and relaxed. Not all therapists are created equal as sensitivity; skill, knowledge and natural health philosophy will vary greatly. At the very least your therapist should be certified under the International Association of Colon Therapists (I-ACT).
As a member of the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapists as well as a member of the Association for Naturopaths and Naturotherapists (ANN) I have access to the latest information and techniques involving colon health.
I am university educated and have worked in education for over 20 years. I have a formal education in holistic nutrition and have worked as a Laser Technician, Bio-identical Hormone Assistant, HCG Diet Consultant and am a Chi Nei Tsang practitioner. I offer my clients Chi Nei Tsang massage treatments that are superior to other clinics that have the clients massage themselves. Most other therapists have their right hand on the equipment and their left hand on the tubing. I have found a way to free up both of my hands which allows me to help the client to have greater releases by massaging the organs.
Unlike many other colon therapists, I do not work out of my home or basement. I believe colon health needs to come out from under the ground and be front and center like all other natural healing therapies. I recently moved to a new location in Sherwood Park and now am the only colon hydrotherapist in the area to be working with a naturopath specialist focused on blood cell analysis. Between the two of us, sickness and disease doesn’t stand a chance!
Who is colon hydrotherapy for?
If you want to improve you health and energy level in a natural way, colon hydrotherapy is for you. The clients who come for treatment vary from the super health conscious who use it for preventative measures to those who have been suffering from digestive disorders for years and couldn’t find a solution until they came to see me.
Some of my clients are athletes, like body builders who need to eliminate before competitions. Some are cyclists or runners who know that over time fecal matter accumulates in their colon and this treatment is drug free, safe and effective. They know that having a well running digestive system will give them an edge in the sport of their choice.
A few people think that if they have regular bowel movements they don’t need to cleanse, but this overlooks the fact that our environments are much more toxic than our bodies were meant to handle. Just like we cleanse the outside of our bodies, we should also cleanse the inside of our bodies.
